Winning at Bingo
When I was a little girl, I’d never won a lot of things, but one thing I knew I could always count on was winning at bingo. The jackpot at the local recreation center was always bite-sized candy or pocket change, but being young, I was determined to win. I remember daubing my many cards with washable markers of bright blue and green then yelling bingo when I got a whole row filled. I didn’t think I’d still be playing the game when I got older, but I was. In junior high school and high school, the prizes changed, but the game never did. We played for decorative pens and pencils and full length candy bars. There wasn’t anyone who didn’t like to play.
Our bingo cards were a little different from the traditional bingo cards, though. The rows and columns were filled with words in French or Spanish. Bingo became a game designed to help us expand our vocabulary or help us review material the day before a test. We yelled bingo, then the teacher could check our cards, and we would collect our winnings. Everyone had fun.
